How Jessie and John Met
1923 , Lovelady, Texas

Around September of 1923, Pop decided he would work his way west to California. He walked down the railroad with the intentions of hopping on a train. Somewhere between Mobile and Livingston, the sheriff stopped him. The sheriff found a gun on him. [Pop's son Jimmy said Pop told him he had a straight razor in his sock.] Anyway, whatever was found on him was enough to land him in the "pokie" for eleven days. ...At the end of eleven days, the sheriff gave him his gun back. He then either walked or got a train to Lovelady, Texas.

Pop found work at Lovelady picking cotton for Mr. Ernest Knox. Around the first of October, they quit picking cotton and began making syrup until the frost.

Beulah and Joe Sessums and their family were renting a house in Lovelady. Beulah was sick and needed some help to take care of her family, so she sent word to Whitney, Texas for her [me] to come. [I] was only sixteen years old, but came to Lovelady to help take care of the Sessums family. Joe worked at the syrup mill at this time as did John Norton. One day [I] took [my] Brother-in-law some lunch. The lady at the syrup mill introduced [me] to Pop. It was love at first sight, at least for Pop. During this time, Pop knew [I] washed the clothes for the Sessums' and asked if [I] would wash his. He payed for the washing of course. He would walk about three miles about three times a week to visit.

Famly History

Before Pop went home to his Auntie's in Mobile for Christmas, he proposed. They had only known each other a few months. He gave her a wrist watch. She didn't think he would really come back after Christmas, but he did. He stayed with the owner of the syrup mill and worked at the mill.

Pop had to borrow the money for he and Nanny to get married. He only had $20 left and didn't have enough to buy her a ring. On August 8, 1924, a friend drove them to the parsonage in his Model A car. The preacher came outside and married them as they remained in the car. Joe and two other friends were also there as witnesses. After the ceremony, Pop and Nanny and Joe drove to the friends house. From there, they walked about 1 1/2 miles back to Beulah's.

The newlyweds lived with the Sessum family for about three weeks. Then they rented a house of their own. The bought some furniture: an iron bedstead, a table and chairs and a cook stove. They only lived there a few months. In October of 1924, they took their bed and went to live with Auntie in Mobile.

The story of how John (Pop) and Jessie (Nanny) met, and got married. A part of Nanny's remembrances as told to Ileen Norton. Written after 2001 for the Ivy family book.
